Actor and politician Vijay Thalapathy, the leader of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), is making headlines after hosting a controversial Iftar party that led to the issuance of a fatwa against him. The fatwa, announced by Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, the president of the All India Muslim Jamat (AIMJ), has stirred up significant tensions between the actor and the Muslim community, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
The reason behind the fatwa stems from accusations that Vijay has portrayed Muslims negatively in his films, coupled with his choice of guests at the Iftar gathering. According to Maulana Razvi, Vijay’s films such as Kathi and Beast have shown Muslims in a poor light, often depicting them as terrorists and extremists. This portrayal has left many in the Muslim community feeling betrayed, as they argue that the actor’s films contribute to harmful stereotypes.
Maulana Razvi pointed out that Vijay, despite maintaining friendly relations with the Muslim community through his political endeavors, has failed to distance himself from the harmful narratives perpetuated by his roles in these films. The cleric highlighted that while Vijay is positioning himself as a political figure who wants the support of Muslims, his past actions, especially his film roles, are inconsistent with these efforts.
"Vijay has formed a political party and engaged with Muslims in a friendly manner. However, his films have portrayed Muslims as terrorists, and now he seeks to gain political favor from the same community he has disparaged," Razvi stated.
Adding fuel to the fire, the controversy surrounding the Iftar party intensified when it was revealed that individuals associated with gambling and alcohol consumption had attended the event. The nature of the guest list raised concerns about the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, which emphasizes spiritual purity and religious observance. Maulana Razvi criticized the actor for inviting such guests, claiming that it was an insult to the Muslim community.
"During the Iftar gathering, gamblers and liquor consumers were invited, which has angered the Sunni Muslims of Tamil Nadu. This act has been deemed disrespectful to the values of Ramadan, and therefore, the fatwa has been issued," Razvi added.
In addition to the fatwa, there has been a growing political dispute involving Vijay’s TVK party. Allegations surfaced earlier this year that TVK had sought special protection from the central government, citing threats from the Muslim community due to Vijay’s portrayal of Muslims in his films. TVK spokesperson Vanniarasu defended the party, calling the accusations politically motivated. He argued that these claims were designed to discredit TVK and undermine its relationship with the Muslim voters.
"Vijay and TVK were only concerned about their safety following the negative portrayal of Muslims in films like Kathi and Beast. These claims are a smear campaign by the DMK and its allies to alienate the Muslim community from TVK," Vanniarasu explained.
As the situation continues to unfold, the fatwa has become a topic of heated debate in Tamil Nadu, where the political climate is tense. The actor’s political ambitions now appear clouded by the fallout from his Iftar party, with many questioning whether his efforts to engage with the Muslim community will be tainted by his previous actions in the film industry.
For Vijay, this controversy could have long-term implications on both his political future and his relationship with the Muslim community. Whether he can mend the rift or if the fatwa and accusations will permanently harm his image remains to be seen. As the days progress, this issue will undoubtedly continue to dominate the political discourse in Tamil Nadu.
